About Mind Mastery

Every athlete has a mental side. But many never fully understand it, and even fewer know how to work with it.

Mind Mastery was founded to help athletes and high-performing individuals understand their minds, master them, and unlimit their full potential.

There is no shortage of mental skills advice in sport today. But much of it is copied and pasted, generic tools applied without a real understanding of the person using them. At Mind Mastery, we do it differently. We start by helping athletes and teams develop a deeper understanding of themselves – their mindset, their patterns, their responses under pressure. From that foundation, we apply the right strategies, in the right way, for the right person.

The result is not just better performance. It is a genuine and lasting shift in how you think, compete, and show up – in sport and in life.

When we work together, you will feel a deep commitment to helping you unlimit your potential. That is not just a slogan. It is the standard we hold ourselves to in every session, with every athlete and team we have the privilege of working with.

The Mind Mastery Approach

Every great result starts with understanding.

Before anything else, we take the time to find out if we are a good fit. Because the relationship between a coach and an athlete or team is crucial. If we both feel it’s right, we arrange the next steps. This does mean we are unable to work with everyone, but the fit has to be right for us to truly help you achieve your goals.

We then invest the time getting to know you. Your story, your strengths, your pressure points, your goals. Because no two athletes are the same, and no two teams are the same. This forms the foundation for our work together.

From that understanding, we build a way of working tailored specifically to you: finding the right tools, the right conversations, and the right moments to help you grow. The goal is also not to make you dependent on us. Our goal is to empower you so that you can leave our work together with a transformed mindset and the ability to continue that transformation long after our sessions have ended.

We are deeply committed to your goals. That means showing up at training sessions, matches, and competitions and being available when it matters most. We go above and beyond because that is what unlimiting your potential requires.

Understanding. Supporting. Empowering (U.S.E) That is the Mind Mastery approach.

Founder & Director – Johan

I am a clinical psychologist with a special interest in sport and high performance, a published researcher, and a former multi-award-winning sport broadcaster. I have worked with professional and youth athletes across a range of sports, in both team and individual settings, helping them reach their full potential.

My work brings together science, real-world experience, and a deep understanding of what it takes to perform under pressure — both in sport and in life. I am also a husband and father of two young boys who usually tag along whenever I’m watching a match or running a session on a field or court somewhere.

A bit about my journey.

I’ve always loved sport. From a young age I remember going with my dad when he refereed rugby matches or played league tennis on a Saturday. I was always on a field or court somewhere, chasing a ball. At school I played pretty much every sport on offer — swimming, rugby, cricket, tennis, and athletics. I represented Western Province in swimming and tennis, but always knew that my future in sport wasn’t going to be as a player.

After school I got involved in broadcasting and eventually landed my dream job at the biggest sport broadcasting channel in Africa. I had the privilege of travelling across the continent covering major sporting events, and in 2016 I covered the Olympic Games in Rio — speaking to some of the best athletes in the world.

I loved the on-air work. But the conversations that stayed with me were never the ones in front of the camera. They were the ones that happened when the cameras were off — when athletes could speak openly about what they were really experiencing. That’s when I knew I wanted to understand athletes on a deeper level and work with them in a more meaningful way. I started studying psychology, qualified as a clinical psychologist, and now get to do what I love every single day.
