The Thriving Young Athlete (Coming August 2026)

Youth sport today is more competitive and visible than ever before. Most young athletes train hard, care deeply, and want to improve, but very few are ever taught how to handle the mental side of competition.

Written by clinical psychologist Johan le Roux, The Thriving Young Athlete draws on years of close work with young, professional, and retired athletes to guide readers through the mental foundations of healthy, high-level sport. Grounded in scientific research and real experiences from training grounds, matches, and honest conversations with athletes, this practical guide helps young athletes:

• Understand the thoughts and emotions that show up during competition
• Handle pressure and recover more quickly after mistakes
• Build real confidence that doesn’t depend on results or selection
• Guide their attention and stay present when it matters most
• Respond to setbacks and criticism in healthier ways
• Compete with freedom while continuing to grow as a person

Because sport should never be a place where young athletes prove their worth. It should be a place where they discover who they are capable of becoming.
